Lengerich memorial path, LWL clinic
The memorial path of the LWL clinic in Lengerich commemorates the state-organized murders of the sick during the National Socialist era, and provides information on the injustices suffered.
The team made a film about the door and how they created
it as a way to present their door in the digital exhibition.

The memorial path at the LWL clinic
Staff at the then Lengerich provincial sanatorium were involved and share the guilt. They filled in registration forms about mentally ill people, helped to organize the transport of the sick, and thereby helped to prepare their murder (called “euthanasia”). A blue minus (life) or a red plus (death) on the registration forms in Berlin decided on the patients’ fate. Known by name are 440 patients who were transported from this clinic to their death. That these terrible crimes against mentally ill people could have happened is incomprehensible, as is the fact that many of the perpetrators did not have to answer for their crimes after 1945. Those affected and their relatives must have felt it an injustice that the historical reappraisal only began after decades of delay. Remembering this injustice binds the LWL clinic in Lengerich and all its staff in their professional actions. Two questions constantly arise: What does the clinic stand for? What do we base our actions on?
